Is Banglalink buying Teletalk? What is confirmed so far

VEON, the parent of Banglalink, has proposed a merger with state-owned Teletalk, while the government says Teletalk is not for sale. What the reports say, what is missing, and what to watch next.

Short answer: no one has bought Teletalk. Banglalink's parent company, VEON, has proposed a merger and wider partnership, and the government has said Teletalk is not for sale. We found no signed deal.

What is reported

  • The proposal: VEON wrote to the government and, according to The Business Standard and Telecompaper, suggested merging Teletalk with Banglalink. It also asked about a partnership with BTCL, the other state-owned telecom company, and said it is interested in investing in the mobile money provider Nagad.
  • The government's answer: the ICT minister said the government will keep Teletalk and upgrade its network instead. Reports say several companies had shown interest in buying it, but the government wants to stay in the mobile market.
  • Size of the plan: some coverage describes the wider VEON plan for Bangladesh as a roughly $1 billion investment in digital banking, infrastructure, AI and mobile financial services. We could not confirm that figure in a primary document.

What is not confirmed

  • No signed agreement, price or timeline.
  • No approval from the government or the regulator, BTRC.
  • Different outlets use different words (merger, partnership, acquisition), so read each headline carefully.

What it would mean for users

Nothing changes today. Teletalk SIMs, packages and service stay as they are. If a deal were ever agreed, it would need government and regulatory approval, and customers would be told how numbers and plans are affected.

What to watch

  1. An official statement from the ICT ministry or BTRC.
  2. A VEON announcement to its investors.
  3. Any change in how the government describes "keeping" Teletalk, for example a partner taking a minority stake.
